What materials are used in Norseman bulkhead systems?

The system is made from heavy-duty double-wall corrugated cardboard with scored flaps and pre-punched features for easy installation and tie placement. This design keeps the system lightweight while still being strong enough for bulk shipping applications. This is a lightweight, cost-effective option for restraining bulk commodities, such as peas, lentils, barley, and other grains.

How easy is it to install a bulkhead system?

Accepted Answer

Bulkhead systems allow simple, one-person installation. The panels are scored for fast folding and positioning, so operators can efficiently set up containment walls without specialized tools. Once the bulkhead is inserted into the doorway, use a bracing system to secure it in place as the final step before loading the shipping container.

What system is recommended for securing the bulkhead?

Accepted Answer

There are a couple of ways Norseman recommends securing the bulkhead in place; one is our patented bracing system caps, used with 2x4 lumber. The other is to use square steel bracing bars. If you use the bracing cap system, it is suitable for standard 20’ or 40’ ISO containers. Use 91-5/8” 2x4 lumber in spruce, pine, or fir that’s #2-&-better quality. Boards must also be heat-treated and IPPC-stamped. The steel bars we provide are a galvanized, high-strength hollow square tube that are 1.5” x 1.5” in size with a 0.083” outer wall and 94.5” in length.

Where do you position the bracing bars on the bulkhead?

Placement squares along the bulkhead mark where to put the bracing bars. Use the marked points depending on the number of bars. Make the bracing bars level when installing them. Do not cross bars diagonally or form triangles. Hang the bars parallel to the ground for correct installation. There is also a diagram printed directly on the bulkheads that shows the proper placement of the steel bars and/or lumber on the bulkhead.

What's the purpose of a bulkhead system?

Bulkheads (grain doors) are containment barriers that sit between the container door and the loaded product. It holds the products in place until the container doors can be closed. They are a cost-effective option for dry flowable bulk product shipments. They’re lightweight for easy installation and can be cut for easy discharge.

The standard bulkhead system is 72” but custom sizes are available upon request.

How do we discharge the product safely?

Accepted Answer

At discharge, it's recommended that one of the container doors remains closed until inspection confirms the container is safe for discharge. Simply cut the bulkhead and tilt the container.
